Well, there is conflicting reports, but it is reported that the Union vessel "Star of the West" was the first vessel to be fired upon by the Confederates from Fort Moultrie, prior to the attack on Fort Sumter.
Then you have the Confederate Commander Beauregarde (CSA Fleet) vs. Union Commander Anderson (USA Fort Sumter) ... interesting to note is that Commander Beauregarde was held in high esteem by Commander Anderson and once served as Commander Anderson's deputy assistant gunnery instructor at West Point.
But the person who actually fired the first shot is reported to be Citadel Cadet "Tuck" Haynesworth. Edmund Ruffin, a preacher who had preached seccession from the United States for years is usually credited with that honor, but he in actuallity gave the order to fire, and Cadet Haynesworth is the one who actually fired the shot.
But, I don't know the answer as to which vessel actually fired the first shot ...

I love this era of history. My ancestors fought on both sides. I don't have a whole lot of info on my Southern ancestor, My Union Ancestor was Francis D. Sanford with the 2nd MD Volunteer Infantry Division, musterd in May 1861, mustered out June 1865 after the Grand Review of the Potomac as a 1st Sgt. His unit saw action at Antietam, 2nd Manassas, the Wilderness, Petersburg, including the Crater where "the remnants of the 2nd MD were decimated" by Confederate forces.

2nd Manassas...as a kid when my parents worked in DC (Naval Academy and Pentagon)...my neighborhood was called Bull Run....down the street from my house was the war memorial dedicated to the battle. Heck, I went to Mosby Woods Elementary. Funny how history comes around...

Shoal, you are correct, however, it was the US Revenue Cutter Harriet Lane. Which since then has become the US Coast Guard.
