Thank You, Thank You, Thank You.
To every single player that attended Hellstorm at SplatBrothers Paintball Park, April 17, 18, and 19, I say Thank You.
The tribute that was offered to me by my friends (SplatBrothers Paintball Park and my Paintball Family) on my 25th anniversary of playing paintball brought back some memories and in itself, was just a little bit humbling.
I wish to thank those that offered photographs … (was my hair really that long?) and embarrassing stories and anecdotes about me during my “roast” for 25 years of paintball …
Ronn “Big Paintbrush” Stern – Field Owner, Friend, Team mate and Charter member, “SplatBrothers Bozos”
John “Doc” Davis – Brother (really), Team mate and Charter member, “The Virginia Irregulars” and right wingman for many years at scenario events, and in real life.
Jim Bird – Team Mate and Charter member, “The Virginia Irregulars”
Michael “Mr. Gadget” Backs – Team Mate and Charter member, “The Virginia Irregulars”
Mike “Chowda” Lowder – Team Mate, Friend, and Captain, “Assault and Battery”
Davi “Coyote“ Velasquez – Friend, sometimes Nemesis, usually a Partner in Crime, Team mate and Charter member, “SplatBrothers Bozos”
Finally, though she didn’t speak or say anything, I want to thank my wife Anna who came out to the field for the Friday festivities … you don’t understand how big a deal that was, for my wife NEVER comes out to the field as she sees Paintball as just something silly that I do on weekends. But, she does support me in my crazy, fun activities and puts up with things like constructing a 45 pound “Necronomicron” in the dining room.
To all the teams and individuals that came out to participate in this game, I cannot thank you enough. Your camaraderie, sportsmanship, and just friendship is why I have been playing this game for the last 25 years.
Affliction, Assault and Battery, Avalon’s Fury

I am certain that I missed someone, or someone’s team, and I am sorry if I did. I really, really, tried to get around to everyone’s campsite Friday Night and to get to everyone before they pulled out on Sunday to shake your hand, welcome you to SplatBrothers and to thank everyone for an absolutely terrific game, and for coming out to help myself and my SplatBrothers / Scenario / Paintball family celebrate my 25 years of paintball play.
I have some specific individuals and/or groups that I wish to thank.
I wish to thank the house band and one of the teams that I belong to, Assault and Battery. The entire team pitched in to make this game possible, and assisted me with ANYTHING that was necessary, from building props, running errands, etc. On Friday night, the team presented me with a working F-1 Illustrator complete with a 7oz CO2 cylinder with butt plate. (I now own two ;D ) I will keep this one in the team trailer so I can use it as a back-up. For those of you new to Paintball, I played with the F-1 Illustrator for over 13 years before I finally had to retire my original. It sort of became a “legend” all by itself. Thank you all.
Ronn and Don for trusting myself and Assault and Battery with creating an event – which is now officially, the LARGEST single event in the history of SplatZone -> SplatBrothers Paintball Park.
SplatBrothers Referee Staff – you guys rocked all weekend. On a side note, Jack, you need to quit sneaking RedBulls from the Red Devil … I don’t know where you got the energy, but being awarded “Most Valuable Referee” from both Generals is a feat seldom accomplished by anyone. Well done.
Samantha Bowles Peet – Samantha gave up a weekend in the mountains with her family that was intended to celebrate her birthday to work the “Snack Shack”. In addition to feeding and watering over 500 players, she routinely stopped into what I started calling “The Hole” to make sure that I had the necessities of life … Coffee and Mountain Dew. Thank You Sam, and again, Happy Birthday.
Nyxx and MJ (Team Solstice and Pub Crawling) (LemonAde as "designated" General) … The two of you do not know how much I sweated when Ronn informed me who the lead teams and probable generals were for this event. Both of you have set an extremely high standard for game directors, field staff and players. I sincerely hope that I met your expectations. As is customary for Team Solstice and Team Pub Crawling, your level of play and sportsmanship met mine. I thank both of you and your teams and team mates.
Jimmy Cofer of the Dyslexic Pirates. For those of you who don’t know Jimmy, he and I go back a long ways … over 18 years to before there was a “SplatZone”. Jimmy, myself and friends used to get together on the property that is currently SplatBrothers to just play some paintball. Jimmy, thank you for coming.
Tommy Hill – Thank you for coming to the park Tommy … Tommy is another one of those people that I have played paintball with and against for many years. Tommy and I started slinging paint together dang near 20 years ago, and I don’t think I have ever met anyone else who could make a pump gun sound like a semi-auto, and be accurate while doing it. Thank you Tommy.
Mr. Gadget – Mike and I actually played together some 20 years ago at the old Combat Zone in Virginia Beach, then re-connected in 2002 during a 24 hour game at SplatBrothers. Sort of like … hey, I know that guy. Paintball really is a small world. Thank you Mike for making the trip and being a Team mate.
Coyote – What can I say here. Davi and I have been playing paintball together for about 10 years, but we match in ways that are mystical. He is the Yin to my Yang, he is the Master Jedi to my Sith Lord. Put us and our teams together on a field and we are a force of nature more powerful than a hurricane, tornado, earthquake or tsunami. We have scenario producers who absolutely will not allow us to play together on the same side … this is partly because we have had several scenario producers that we have literally stolen their game away from them. He has had me arrested on the field of play – real handcuffs – I have had him traded by his own team to mine as a pet to be led around with a leash. We are best of friends and I thank him for helping celebrate my 25th anniversary, and I can truly say to him, with no thoughts of any “gay” connotations, “ I love you Buddy” … and Thank you.
Finally, my brother John and nephew Kyle. Thank you for making the trip South for the game and helping celebrate 25 years. I got John and my other brother Tim (who could not make the trip) addicted to paintball some 23 years ago … So John, all those “nice” things you said about me … (he he he … paybacks a B*tch ;D )
Thank you all for a great weekend and I hope that everyone got home safely.
