PILOT: Has the ability to fly a simulated aircraft (helicopter, plane, etc.) for up to a 30-minute time period each flight. Should an aircraft stay out longer than its allotted time before returning to base to refuel, it will crash. The aircraft can carry one pilot and normally up to four additional passengers. Players cannot be shot at or shoot from a flying aircraft until at such time it lands and the troops disembark. To land an aircraft, the pilot must place the simulated aircraft on the ground and release it for a 10-second count, minimum, before the aircraft can take off again. Pilot and passengers are live once the aircraft lands. Should a passenger let go of the aircraft's rope (or pilot) while in flight, he is eliminated. Passengers can only disembark when the aircraft has landed properly. Aircraft are not to land closer than 20 feet to any other live player. A LAW rocket can take out a flying aircraft! Flying aircraft can fire on other aircraft while in flight --regular hit rules apply. NOTE: An aircraft may land and drop you off in the middle of a swarm of enemy troops just itching to shoot someone! FURTHERMORE: A Demolitions character with a loaded LAW can also Barrel Tag the aircraft with the LAW, if they can ambush it! Players may NOT AT ANY TIME use aircraft as cover for shooting people. Players may not follow within 20 feet of an aircraft.
Now I believe there was a a bit of confusion early on between the tank 20 foot rule and the plane 20 foot rule. And that this early mistake was then perpetuated throughout the day. Both are in place for safety reasons, but the concerns are different and thus they have different variations. The size and mass of a moving tank are the concern in that situation and thus you have a complete twenty foot safety zone. With planes the concern is the moment when a plane lands and goes from being "safe" from ground troops to a live target. The goal is to have some cushion to keep players from being shot "point blank." If a plane passes you, you can't run next to it to keep it from landing, but it is perfectly acceptable to pass by and as far as barrel tagging from ambush, this should be refering to the not so simple task of being able to get to the plane in the first place.
To deny the ability of a demo player to approach closer than 20 feet to a plane and require them to be shot down, puts an undo risk of injury to players.

As with tanks, there should be a ref with the planes at all times. That would have solved the issue we had, I'm sure.
No ref should mean no plane.
And I believe shooting someone with a nerf at 20ft (or closer) constitutes a fairly serious safety hazard.

A tank does not require a ref I believe but just a tank walker who has to be provided by the team. That is to ensure player safety. A plane does not pose the same risks. The problem was merely a misunderstanding of rules.

Slacker, your concern is admirable but remember those rules are in place to promote safety and are not the only rules as we also have the optional 20ft surrender rule. If you have other suggestions on how to improve upon these rules though we are always willing to listen

A ref is required for planes and tanks at all other fields I have recently played at, they are the only people who can make the calls at the time they happen. Safety walkers and friends with cameras cannot be involved in those situations, during the plane fiasco the camera operator was mistaken to be a ref by several players. That caused more mayhem, when a ref finally came over how can they make a call on a situation they had not seen, finding on arrival 20 players standing around arguing. Given the choice between a nerf at 21 feet or a barrel tag the plane should be automatically shot down, nerfs have the power to knock goggles off at that range (being shot in the jaw by a nerf can be similar to being punched I have seen the effects)

The players refused. and so for safety i chose to barrel tag them rather than shoot and take the chance of injuring a player. Jincay, i dont think the idea of automatically downing the plane is necessarily the right way to go. If the plane had known i was there, they could have begun running, causing me to take a hasty shot and possibly miss, or tried to land and take me out before i could shoot, or even tried to dodge the nerfy.

Ok Slacker...here's the deal...you have now learned your lesson on the rules...therefore, until the rule is changed, if you are caught in a similar situation and you can not just reach out to barrel tag them from where ever you are just pull the trigger from 6 feet away. Once you shoot them that close and one of them cries...you know as well as the ref that the plane did get hit and that you were the one that didn't encroach on the 20ft rule.
Don't let this happen again Slacker...just pull the trigger and blast the sorry chap from 10 feet away.

You know... I really don't understand why there is an issue here. Shoot the plane. If you are playing demo and are worried about shooting someone's mask off. Practice more. Been shot point blank with both nerfies and paintballs. Didn't make one heck of a lot of difference to me. I was out either way.

Until the time when someone tries to duck or move out of the way & gets hit in the face by a large projectile at 230fps, knocking their goggles off or worse.
Again, the situation would not have occurred as it did if a ref was assigned to follow the plane. That's what should be in the rules & it is what should be done from this event forward.
Given my high regard for Splatbrothers' refs - I would gladly accept any ruling they would make - if they were there (hint, hint again).

Slacker the rule is in place to keep players from shooting the plane within 20 feet, I feel it is more likely that a player would run to the plane within 20 feet to shoot it if the rule was removed, then a player being approached on by the plane, if you keep the rule.
A fair solution to this would be
1.Demo Player cannot approach the planes 20 foot barrier, or he is eliminated.
2. If a Plane Approaches a Demo player within 20 feet, the Demo player may yell "PLANE DEAD", Thus disposing of one rocket from his rocket count but, killing the plane, if he misses this opportunity the plane is not dead.
Also, maybe a referee, should walk the plane. This would allow a more safe environment for the players, and settle a lot of disputes. The Referee would be responsible for keeping players from shooting the plane while it is flying, monitoring the fuel time (Because as a player I don`t carry a watch, so as a flyboy i cant monitor it), and be able to decide what accurately represents 20 ft.

As the "friend with camera" in the situation, I made it 100% clear I was not a referee when I stated it loud and clear. Also, if you did view the Safety Video as studiously as is claimed, then you can also remember it stated Photographers will be wearing Blaze Orange, referees in striped shirts or the neon green BGS t shirts. That claim holds no water, my involvement in the situation was to record video footage.
But as Corndog has already stated, we learn from mistakes and move on from them.

i think it should be a rule to barrel tag planes cause of people getting hit in the head by them or in the private square spot that sucks... both of those situations has almost happened to me and in both times our plan could of been tagged by a Nerf rocket .. I'm not that worried about it UNLESS its willow shooting cause when you c that nerfy come out that rocket ide rather not be on the receiving end

Everyone playing should obviously be concerned with safety. We all play a game that is under scrutiny by people that would love to see it banned, and insurance companies that make demands so they don't have to spend their money.
The easy answer is to have a ref shadowing airplanes/helicopters to enforce the rules and deal with any controversy. Assuming the planes/helicopters may be on a mission a ref should definitely be with it anyway.
Players should not have to get into screaming matches when they're trying to enjoy their weekend of 280fps bliss. The refs at this game seem to be getting a lot of praise that they deserve and earned, it should have been their place to settle this argument not the people with the RED or BLUE ABT.
Personally, I'd prefer not to be shot by a nerf from 6, 21, or even 50 feet. My team takes this particular incident to heart because we've seen the damage a nerf can do to a persons face from a close distance (about 20').
So that's our opinion, that's all we're trying to convey.
