I have no problem with anything you are saying above, Slacker. Personally I would consider a megaphone a prop IF I were considering taking it out on the field myself....and would get it approved prior to the event, but that is just me (again...it is something not NORMALLY seen on the field of play, and not something clearly defined under "Allowed equipment" in the GSRP...IE....PROP). I do however believe that you are getting the whole prop thing confused with the whole safety thing when using the examples of megaphone, whistles, and air horns comparatively. These items are set aside for REF use only for safety reasons (as you are aware I'm sure). The megaphone concept is a completely different category of interest.
I have no doubt that the shield was allowed by the event staff under guidelines for use. the REFs were on top of their game this past weekend, and certainly would have intervened if it was otherwise. As far as I know (once again), no one complained about the shield being used. I knew exactly what the message was behind the shield's appearance, and found it extremely amusing, thus enjoying its use. Most no doubt (again) thought it was a game prop of some religious value anyway.
As has been previously stated, the GSRP are GUIDELINES more than anything else. I would personally like to see them remain that way, and have players not pinned in to the same old thing...all the time. I did take exception to trying to mix in the mask thing to the prop thing ("technically it is a shield...IE a prop by VooDoo's definition" I believe was the concept). That is where the "Dont toy with the safety rules" thing came from in my response.
Not everything is, or can be listed as allowed or not. That is specifically why it is asked or recommended that one check with the event staff prior to an event for anything out of the ordinary. I am certainly not saying that umbrella's, shields, or megaphones (for example) should not be allowed if approved. My argument is simply the "Approved" portion, so that it causes no undue process in the terms of accusations of "cheating" by players feeling slighted by their appearance.
Apologies if my stance on the matter was unclear.
